Brookfield Zoo: Dolphins Relocate to Minnesota During Arena Makeover
Due to the nature and timeline of the renovation project, it was necessary to move the dolphins to another accredited facility. Renovations scheduled for the 20-year-old Seven Seas dolphin arena include relining of the pool, installation of a new HVAC system, upgrades to the water filtration system, roof repairs, and an increase of space on the center deck to allow for animal care needs.
In order to provide the best possible care for the animals, CZS staff will continue to engage the dolphins in their routine husbandry care training while at the other facility. Eventually they may be integrated with the other dolphins at Minnesota Zoo. During the dolphins’ stay at Minnesota Zoo, six of the 12 Seven Seas keepers will be housed in Minneapolis. The six keepers will work on a rotation, so there will always be at least three or four staff the dolphins are familiar with working each day. The other six keepers will be at Brookfield Zoo caring for the seals and sea lions.
